Another Digital Camera Suggestions! Canon Ixus 100 IS & Canon Powershot A2100 IS?

I got another good suggestions from my friends for digital camera that I should get and after thinking through the day, I decided to choose between 2 digital cameras. Both of them are Canon: Ixus 100 IS & Powershot A2100 IS, so other four cameras in my previous post probably not my choice anymore (well, I don’t know, let’s say it’s for now).

Both of them cost more than Rp 2 millions / $200, about $20-$30 more expensive, but it’s a good deal for that amount of money. For a start, let’s see the specifications first:

Let’s summarize it in short way.
Both of the camera almost have a same specifications: 12 megapixels, have a same processor Digic 4, have a same sensitivity, have a same white balance, both has no manual settings, and so on. So I can safely say that, both of this camera is rival each other. Now, let’s see the differences, start from the price!

Ixus 100 IS is more expensive than Powershot A2100. Ixus 100 IS cost about Rp 2,425,000 / $240, while Powershot A2100 only cost for about Rp 2,185,000 / $220. Why Ixus 100 is more expensive? Well, I don’t know the exact reason but after some researches I think I know the reason. First of all, even though both camera were released in the early of 2009 (around March), but I heard that Canon is going to discontinue the A2100, so I think they want to release a new one and drop the price as clearance sale. Second, Ixus 100 capable of capture a HD video in 720p. Able to capture HD video is a new feature in digital camera nowadays so it must have affect to the price. Third, ehm, well I just don’t know any other reasons, hehehe.. perhaps it’s because A2100 has no optical viewfinder? Is it because A2100 heavier? Hmm…

Being cheaper doesn’t mean A2100 has worse specs. In some cases, I think A2100 is better than Ixus 100. Let’s say it has 3 inch LCD screen instead of just 2.5 inch the one that Ixus has (this is the reason why A2100 doesn’t have optical viewfinder I guess). A2100 has 1 cm macro focus while Ixus 100 only 3cms. A2100 able to do 6x optical zoom while Ixus 100 only 3x optical zoom. Ixus 100 already use a lithium battery, while A2100 still use AA batteries. What else? Image quality? Some people said that Powershot A2100 has a better image quality.

When it comes to my own opinion, I think I will choose Canon Powershot A2100 IS. Ixus series is good for fashion and famous for its ultra compact size. But when I think about small size, I realize that I have a -not small- palm and fingers, and having a small camera isn’t a good thing since I might press or touch the wrong button or panel or whatever. Then again, I choose A2100 because it have a cheaper price. I have to calculate the budget for buy the accecories (if I didn’t get it when I buy the camera), like the screenprotector, bigger memory card, camera bag/case, etc.

Soooo… what do you think guys??

    Both suck!!! Hehehe XD
Coz the ISO sensitivity is only 1600.

Tapi kalo ga masalah sama ‘grainy2 di kala gelap’ si ga masalah.
Liat sample picsnya aja gar. ^^

  2. [...] Yes, finally! After struggling for more than a week choosing a right digital camera as a replace of my old analog SLR that got stolen (with a limited budget), in the end I made my mind buy the Canon Powershot A2100 IS,  instead of Canon Ixus 100 IS, which is also the strongest candidate that I want to buy back then (read the whole story here).
